meet the artist

Joanna Bacas is a queer artist and writer from Athens, living and working in Berlin since 2012.

Joanna moved countries at 17 to enroll in the Fine Art/Sculpture Diploma of the School Of Fine Arts Berlin-Weissensee. Parallel to her studies, she channeled her artist’s gaze into building a career as an avant-garde editorial makeup artist, a profession in which she thrived for many years after graduation.

In 2020, following the call of creative sovereignty, she furthered her technical education through a private, mentor-led training in silversmithing. This enabled the creation of her first sculptural jewellery series: Objects of a Matriarchal Utopia. OMU is an ongoing body of work, consisting of limited, original pieces.

Today, Joanna’s transdisciplinary artistic practice spans ceramic sculpture, fine jewellery, art direction, poetry, makeup art and set & prop design - though she considers herself a storyteller above all.

Her work has been seen internationally, including a wide range of exhibitions: Aksioma Institute for Contemporary Art (Ljubljana, Slovenia), panke gallery (Berlin, Germany), Die Angewandte (Vienna, Austria), HGW Supporting Queer Arts (Athens, Greece), Milan Jewelry Week, Budapest Jewelry Week; collaborations with the National Theatre Of Greece (Athens, Greece), Berlin Fashion Week; publications with Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Playboy, Schön! Magazine, TUSH, & more.

Joanna is neurodivergent, speaks 3.5 languages and collects vibrators and vintage barbies.
